Best For Birds

Birds are intelligent creatures with active minds and they can soon become bored if they had not kept entertained. Birds that are bored and start to exhibit a desirable behavior such as squawking a lot and pulling out all the feathers. One way to keep your bird amused even when you’re not around is to make sure that you provide him with a variety of bird toys.

One thing to think about when picking out toys for your bird is whether or not the toys match with your bird size. Toys designed for small bird like a parakeet might not be safe for a large parrot because the powerful beaks of the bigger birds can easily break the toys into pieces which can be dangerous for your pet.

Different sized birds do seem to enjoy different types of toys but one toy that all birds seem to like is the ladder. you want to be careful, however, that you choose the right side letter for your bird obviously smaller birds will meet once with wrongs that are closer together.

Swings and hanging ring seemed to be a bit more popular for the smaller pet birds. That’s not to say that larger birds don’t enjoy them as some do but in general the smaller birds seem to have a lot more fun. Hang a couple in your pets cage and you soon see him swinging around and hanging from them and just having a heck of a time.

The bigger birds seem to like maize toys and puzzles especially if you can put some of their favorite treats inside the toy. They also like ropes that have leather knots which they can unknot with their beaks. This gives them something to work out of their mind instead of hanging around doing nothing.

Birds have the mentality of small child and just like children birds can really get enjoyment out of a play gym. you can find these In all shapes and sizes, but typically they either sit on a table on top of the birds cage and when he is out of the cage they provide him with a variety of interesting things to play on including ladders seesaws and swings. Not only will your bird entertain himself on these though probably entertain you as well!

When you are shopping for bird toys there are some you might want to think twice about buying. Although most birds love mirrors and love to look at themselves, it does might not serve the purpose you want if they actually think it’s another bird they may bond with their own reflection and not care so much about bonding with people.

Always evaluated toy for safety purposes toys that are not well made and can come apart and harm your bird should be avoided. Also toys that have little areas that might pinch your bird’s toes or that he can get his head caught and should be avoided. Remember, your bird can get his little beak into just about anything so you want and make sure the toys are tough enough so that he can’t break anything off and swallow it which could be disastrous and possibly even fatal.

Your pet bird doesn’t necessarily need expensive toys to play with, many birds love things like paper towel tubes and tongue depressors. Just be sure that if you do you keep your bird toy like that that you make sure he doesn’t rip apart and start eating it - it might not be a bad idea to stay around and watch them whenever you give him any new toy.

Because your pet bird gets bored easily you want to rotate his toys. Put a few toys in his cage and then hide the others away where he can’t see them. After a week or two remove the toys that are in his cage and replace them with the ones you hid away. You can take this opportunity to clean the toys that he has already played with, then hide them away for a week or two. When you bring them out again he’ll think he’s got new toys to play with!

I have ferrets, and would love some birds of prey, or maybe a barn owl. Preferably, hand reared, then it loses out on nothing as it has never been wild. They are beautiful animals and i would love one. Any tips on how difficult, budget i would need - sterling - temperautre, feeding etc.
thanks.

I don ‘t know about other countries, but in the USA Owls are protected birds and our government say unless you are a accredited sanctuary you are not allowed to own them. If you find one that is injured, you must take it to closet vet to be transferred to local wildlife officer.

Sorry but you can’t make pets of wild animals and birds.

Like if a Bat and a Robin had a baby what kind of bird would it be and what would it look like?

a batbin, probably a have bat wings but have the feathers like a robin and have just a messed up face :P

my zebra finch doesnt eat the cuddle bone (its new) and i want to kno if i scrape the "calcium" off the bone and put it in the water…will that be ok?

I would boil some eggs, remove the shell, and crush up the shell. Give that to your zebra finch for calcium. Don’t scrape the cuttlebone and put it into your finch’s water. That will cause bacteria to accumulate and can make your zebra finch sick.

How many different types of birds of prey are there in the UK? I’m really interested in this subject and would like an answer from an expert please!

I wouldn’t class myself as an expert but I will try to give you an appropriate answer:

Owls: Barn Owl, Tawney Owl, Snowy Owl, Little Owl, Long-eared Owl, Short-eared Owl, European Eagle Owl.( The European Eagle Owl is no longer considered a British Owl and the Snowy Owl is a visitor to the isles). Owls are split into 3 groups; NOCTURNAL (night-active owls), DIURNAL (daytime-active owls) and KRAPUSKULAR (dawn & dusk-active owls). You can tell which catageory they belong to through their eye colour; black - nocturnal; yellow-diurnal; orange-krapuskular. Also only 47% of all owl species are nocturnal!

Falcons: Kestral, Merlin, Hobby, Gryfalcon (visitor bird), and Peregrine Falcon. A falcon can be easily distinct from other birds of prey. A black line below their eye ( known as a tear drop line), a notch in their hooked beak (known as the tomial tooth) and their slender pointed wings. Although the cheetah is the fastest LAND animal, the true fastest animal in the world is the Peregrine Falcon , who can reach speeds over 200mph.

Hawks: There are only two true British types of hawkes: Goshawk and Sparrowhawk. The Sparrowhawk is the one that you are most likley to see hunting the garden birds in your garden.

Buzzards: Rough-legged buzzard, Honey buzzard, and Common Buzzard. The common Buzzard is the birds you see sitting on fences etc on motorways. Buzzards are considered lazy birds throughout falconry as they prefer to eat roadkill and scavenge rather than hunt.

Harriers: Hen Harrier, Montagu’s Harrier and Marsh Harrier.

Kites: We only have one species of Kite here: the Red Kite. The were very rare and are now beginning to improve in numbers.

Eagles: Golden Eagle
FISH Eagles; White Tailed Sea Eagle, Osprey( I have classed the Osprey as an Eagle but ** IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE EAGLE FAMILY**)

Now I may not be an expert but experts aren’t the only people who can tell you things, just bare that in mind please!!

Posted by admin

what bird lives in upper Sonoran Desertscrub, it is small like a verdin, kinda long tail, makes a raspy phhhhsssssss sound?
i didnt get the best look at it, but it was gray and had a lighter underbelly, i didnt get to see much else. im thinking the black gnatcatcher is the one though
i mean the black-tailed gnatcathcer

It could be a gnatcatcher, what color was it?
Except for the long tail, it might be a kinglet.
Try this site to listen to vocalizations of the gnatcatcher to see if it was what you heard:

http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Blue-gray_Gnatcatcher/id

(The black-tailed gnatcatcher is also a Sonoran species-but the bird site didn’t have an example of their call).

I want to learn about birds & animals nearby: Prairie, marsh, pond, and forest in the north american midwest.

Looking for FREE VIDEO of wildlife and identifying animals, plants, insects, birds…birdcall samples would be great.
Paul, that was the most horrible non-answer I ever received. You give me a search pointing to my own question and no answer? Yikes.

Here is a search for your question. Notice that your question comes up first. That means its the best site for the search.

She already has a collar with a bell but somehow manages to catch them anyway. Is there anything else we can do as we love watching the birds on our feeders.

Your cat has just killed a robin - so what? That’s life, it’s nasty but it happens. Cats are natural predators of birds, birds are natural predators of insects, insects eat people, people kill animals to eat, coyotes kill cats, humans kill humans, and humans kill and eat birds! Life isn’t perfect, horrible things happen.
There is no point in putting bells on cats or restricting their freedom, they have as much right to live their lives as you or I do. I’d either make it more difficult for cats to reach the bird feeders by putting them well away from anywhere cats can jump at them, or gradually stop feeding the birds, they’ll find another source of food for themselves. In my opinion your first loyalty is to your cat, you chose her to live with you, birds come and go, they are beautiful but they are not pets.

Rescue them if you can, but if you can’t just say "Sorry bird" and dispose of it, and thank your cat for the gift.

PS to the person who thinks amputating a cat’s toes because it follows it’s natural instinct to hunt birds - you really should never have a cat as you do not have one clue what you are talking about.

it looks like this: http://loudounlandscapes.com/pastoral/uploaded_images/FinchDogwood-778295.jpg

how can i nurse it back to health

i put grapes and bird seed in a shoe box with it

what do i do to help the poor thing :’( ?

That is an American Goldfinch.

Please take it to an animal rehabilitation center right now! Find one at http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact

Good luck!

You cannot keep it for over 48 hours; it’s illegal. Provide water and grapes are fine.

Keep dogs and cats away from it please.
