Best For Birds

I live in north central Kansas and this morning i was out at my parents rural home where I noticed a globe shaped nest hanging form a branch in a tree in there front yard. it is made of grass and is roughly slightly larger then a softball. there is a opening on the north side and a streamer coming off of it just under the opening i would say the opening is a little bigger then a golf ball. I have lived her my whole live and have roamed the creek and river near by for years and I can honestly say that i have never seen a nest like this. I did some looking and it kind of resembles a humming birds nest, but i could not find a size comparison. would a humming birds nest be this big? or is it something else?

There are a number of North American bird species that build hanging nests. However, many of them are not found in Kansas (Bushtit, Becard, etc.)

The most likely bird species in your area is either an Orchard or Baltimore Oriole. Google pictures of their nests.

Albino pet bird with band on leg?

Posted by admin

SO I bought my pet bird (Snowy) like 5 years ago. And she has had this band on her foot. What is it for?
I was considering that she was caught or raised in a certain hatchery or something? Is it an identification? is it because shes albino?

(her band number by the way is:
36 BFB05 L)

Lucky! My albino budgie’s leg band paint is wearing off, so I can’t read it. It is the identification of the breeder/pet store, hatch date, and year.

Also,
What type of bird beak would have a fulcrum further away from the load?

Thanks.

Finches have very short beaks - therefore the load would have to be close to the fulcrum (or hinge of the bird’s jaw) so I think they would be a good example for the first question. Here’s some pictures: http://www.birdingmaine.com/images/gold_finch_closeup2.jpg

As for the second question, an ibis would be ideal since they have very long beaks.

the ramifications of the reprocutions of the industrial revolution on the habitat of the great north american yellow-breasted humming bird?

It’s humming was difficult for others to hear, this lead to most bird watchers to think that the yellow-breasted humming bird was, perhaps, no longer a resident of the said habitat, thus industry was allowed to move into the area.

. . . and if you didn’t know . . . now you do!

Its my undestanding that only large birds such as Eagles,Ducks,Geese have penises. If that is so how is procreation done with smaller male birds, i e robins ,cardinals etc.

It’s not about the size of the bird. Whilst the ostrich, the largest of all birds, does have a penis, there are other large birds that don’t, and some small ones, like the buffalo weaver, that do. Eagles actually do not have penises - most birds don’t. They mate simply by pressing their cloacas together (the cloaca is the single opening birds use to excrete, mate and lay eggs) in what is known as a ‘cloacal kiss’. Some duck species have some of the largest penises, relative to body size, in the animal kingdom - longer than their bodies in some cases! See this image:

What Birds To Get In An Aviary?

Posted by admin

I am planning to build an aviary but I am not sure what birds would get along. The birds I am interested in having the most are sun conure, quaker and zebra finches. Would these birds get along and what other birds are there that would?
Thanks.

i think that u should stick with just one type of bird…. 1st of all they all eat different foods so they might end up eating the wrong food and get sick. if u just get 1 type of bird then u only need 2 buy one type of food and it might save money and make it easier….

No, if they did that they’d have to do the same with dogs, cats, horses, etc. . . the lists would go on and on.
