There are many types of bird feeders and one popular style is the platform bird feeder. It is the kind of feeder which looks like a tray that is slightly elevated or totally mounted off the ground.

There is a difference between a hanging bird feeder and a platform bird feeder. In the hanging type, the seeds are placed on its small openings. The platform feeder on the other hand is obviously like a platform wherein you can easily place or scatter the seeds on it.

Platform bird feeders can also be used if you want to prevent squirrels from attacking the feeder. You can mount it off the ground by hanging it or using a pole to elevate it and a squirrel baffel wherein squirrels will not be able to reach it. You can also put a screen on the feeder so that squirrels will have a hard time reaching the bird seeds.

This type of feeder caters to the birds which feeds on the ground such as towhees, doves, sparrows, and even to bigger birds such as jays and grosbeaks. Recently, the manufacturers of bird feeder have started building and selling platform feeders maybe because of the fact that this kind of feeder is very easy to build.

Building one for your backyard is quite an easy task. It only requires few materials such as wood, wood glue, nails or screws and paint. Here is a guideline on how to make a platform bird feeder.

1. Start cutting the wood in sizes such as 16 x 10 inches for the back, 10 x 10 inches for the bottom, 2 x 10 inches for the front, 12 x 12 inches for the roof, and 12 x 10 for the sides.

2. Next is to attach the cut pieces together. Nail, glue or screw the back of the feeder to the bottom feeder. Make sure to do it properly to avoid any accidents.

3. Attaching the sides of the feeder to the back and bottom woods is the next thing to do. You can do this by either using a glue or nails. The roof is the last piece to be attached.

4. Paint your feeder for aesthetic purposes. Since you’ll be placing it in your back or front yard, beautifying the feeder is a must to serve as home decoration as well.

5. Place the feeder in your backyard by hanging or slightly elevating it from the ground.

The benefit of using a platform bird feeder is that it is very easy to mange. You can easily fill the feeder with bird seeds and it is very visible to the avian. Since most platform feeders are open, you won’t have a hard time scattering the seeds on it. It is also very easy to clean compare to other types of feeders.

The downside of this one is that it can be easily attack by squirrels and other large birds. The seeds can also be easily blown off during windy days which are not a good thing. It can also be a source of illnesses if it is not properly cleaned.

If you want to avail of the platform bird feeder without the hassle of doing it yourself, you can try buying it online or even in the nearest pet shops on your block. There are different kinds of platform feeders nowadays. The manufacturers keep on updating it with new designs to keep it more useful.

Platform feeders are the simplest and most basic style among bird feeders, but it can be utilized with any types of food and commonly used by all bird feeders. In line with this, the platform feeder is indeed very versatile among all feeding techniques.

Where can i take it for identification?

You’re kidding me. How intelligent could you be? You don’t just shoot something to kill it if you think it’s interesting! You’re supposed to take pictures and watch the bird’s behaviors in order to ID it. No one is going to accept a body. You are an amateur, and a kook, not a scientist.

The H1N1 swine flu virus in North America currently concerning global public health officials is not the first triple hybrid human/bird/pig flu virus to be discovered. The first was discovered in a North Carolina factory farm in 1998. Since the 1918 pandemic, an H1N1 flu virus has circulated in pig populations, becoming one of the most common causes of respiratory disease on North American pig farms.

What do you think?

In 1998, swine flu was found in pigs in four U.S. states. Within a year, it had spread through pig populations across the United States. Scientists found that this virus had originated in pigs as a recombinant form of flu strains from birds and humans. This outbreak confirmed that pigs can serve as a crucible where novel influenza viruses emerge as a result of the reassortment of genes from different strains

NOT SURE WHAT ARE THE 4 STATES

A robin’s egg is blue due to a pigmentation in a bird’s uterus before it lays the egg. If you want to get really specific, these pigmentations are made by the broken down hemoglobin. The fact that the robin’s egg is blue is more or less a defense mechanism. Blue eggs blend in with the nests better than white eggs and are therefore more difficult for potential predators to see. Many robins also build their first nests out of leaves that are a blueish-green in color - and again, because the eggs are blue, they blend in better.

Hope this helps! :)

Rice Finch baby birds?

Posted by admin

Our finches had 2 babies ..well 3. One egg broke, the other died a few weeks after it hatched and well the other doesn’t seem to want to fly. It just turned one month on Christmas day. My mom said it’s supposed to come out after like a month. It did but dropped to the bottom of the cage we waited to see if it would try fly, he just sat there and tried to sleep lol. Again 4 days later(today) flies out and drops to the bottom so we wait a little longer this time, and after a few attempts gives up and tries to sleep. Both times we placed him back into the nest. Does anyone know when he should start flying? I just need a second opinion.

did you give the parents "eggs foods" these are essential. they are high nutrition foods that the parents must eat to gain nutrients and pass on to the baby.if you did not supplement the parents diet, then that means the bird is undernourished therefore underdeveloped, meaning it will start flying later than normal.can it hop around? is it fully feathered?(not just down) does it seem healthy? if it is those things, then just wait(and look up what to feed the parents-they cant raise a baby on just seeds!)and it will get around to it

She is a small finch-type bird that has made a nest in my garage.

Normally small finches take from14-16 days for their eggs to hatch and that is from the last egg laid.

So calculate from when you saw the first egg or when you discovered the nest and the number of eggs in it.normally they lay between 3-5 eggs for a clutch.

Yours could be due to hatch at any day now.

Please try not to disturb the parents as this may be their first breeding season and they could desert their young if disturbed

Bird Flu Protection Methods

Posted by admin

Bird flu appeared in Hong Kong in 1997 and started to extend among poultry birds and flocks of wild birds rapidly. People who had a contact with infected birds fell ill with avian flu and many of them died. Researches have become anxious about bird flu protection, for the virus could start to pass not only from bird to human, but also from human to human. And that would result in another pandemic like Spanish flu outbreak that killed millions of people.

Mechanisms of Catching the Virus and Bird Flu Protection

Like common cold or influenza, bird flu gets into human organism through dirty hands contacting with mucilaginous membranes of eyes and nose. Thus the first step of bird flu protection is to keep hands as clean as possible. For this purpose many pharmaceutical companies advise using disposable gloves and hand sanitizer. You may also wash your hands thoroughly, but in this case only specific types of soap may help. For instance, anti-bacterial soap is not recommended.

Another way of bird flu protection is nasal irrigation. But as well as washing hands this method is not that simple, either. Those people whose work is connected with direct interaction with infected birds and ill people are strongly recommended to wear respirators and biofilter masks.

Taking Medicine as Another Way of Bird Flu Protection

Tamiflu is considered to be one of the most effective remedy that fights H5N1 strain. Tamiflu is an antiviral drug that contains Oseltamivir phosphate which is considered to ensure successful bird flu protection. One of the disadvantages of using Tamiflu is that the virus may become resistant to this medicine. Therefore it is recommended to take an additional drug of the same family, like Relenza (zanamivir). In any case it is necessary to follow the doctor’s orders.

Another disadvantage of Tamifluis that its effects may turn to be so destructive that it may influence the immune system negatively. Therefore it is necessary to start with improving the state of immunity. It is obvious that you should take a ‘knock-out’ dose of vitamin C every day and must not take any antibiotics, for they cannot struggle agains the bird flu virus and will just kill antibodies that are produced by human organism and serve as natural instrument of bird flu protection.

Besides that, some researches recommend to take over-the-counter drugs, which help to enhance immunity and will defend you from negative conditions of the environment. These are such substances as Thymic Protein A, ImmunoLin (Immune Advantage) and Beta 1,3-D Glucan.
